How we calculate it
Volume = Bed area × Depth, converted to cubic yards. No waste factor is applied. Mulch spreads easily, so this calculator estimates the exact volume for your chosen depth.
Understanding your estimate
Buy too little mulch and you end up stretching a half-covered bed with whatever's left in the last bag, thin right where it ran out first. Buy too much and the extra sits in torn bags against the fence until next season, slowly turning into compost you never asked for. Mulch spreads easily once it's down, which is exactly why guessing at bags before you buy them is trickier than it looks.
A 10 by 10 bed, worked out
Say you're covering a 10 ft by 10 ft bed at the default 3 in depth.
- Bed area: 10 ft × 10 ft = 100 ft².
- Depth in feet: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
- Volume: 100 × 0.25 = 25 ft³, which converts to 0.93 yd³.
- Standard 2 ft³ bags: 25 ÷ 2 = 12.5, rounded up to 13 bags.
Why the bag count always rounds up
12.5 becomes 13, never 12. This calculator never rounds a bag count down, on either bag size it offers. Coming up half a bag short means a trip back to the store while the last few feet of bed sit bare, and mulch spread thin in one patch doesn't hold moisture or block weeds the way the rest of the bed does. One leftover bag costs you nothing you weren't already prepared to pay for. It's also why adding depth to a bed never lowers the bag count this calculator gives you. The math only moves in one direction as the bed gets deeper, and the rounding rule respects that.
Why there's no waste factor, unlike concrete or tile
Our Concrete Calculator and our Tile Calculator both add a waste factor on top of the raw volume, because spillage and cutting losses are real on those jobs. This one doesn't. Mulch spreads easily and settles into whatever shape the bed's edges are, so there's no meaningful trim loss the way there is with a tile you have to cut around a corner, and the spec behind this calculator doesn't call for a margin here. That's a deliberate choice, not something we forgot. If you want extra on hand for a top-up later in the season, that's a decision you make by adding depth, not one this calculator makes for you.
The 50-liter bag is our estimate, not a spec number
The 2 ft³ bag is the size the spec actually defines. The metric side of this calculator assumes a 50-liter bag, about 1.77 ft³, because that's a common size for mulch and topsoil sold by the liter, but no spec handed us that number. It's a reasonable stand-in, not a guarantee it matches what's on the shelf at your garden center; bag sizes in liters vary more by supplier than the 2 ft³ bag does in the US. If you buy mulch in a different bag size, divide your calculated volume by that bag's actual capacity instead of trusting the count this calculator shows for the metric bag.
Why this skips the spec's shortcut math
The formula this calculator was built from does the whole conversion in one move: divide area times depth in inches by 324, and out comes cubic yards. 324 is just 12 times 27, inches to feet folded together with feet to yards, compressed into a single number nobody would recognize on sight. This calculator does it in two visible steps instead, area times depth to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards, because a number you can trace back to two ordinary conversions is worth more than a slightly shorter formula nobody can check by eye.
