How we calculate it
Planks = ceil(Room area / Plank area × (1 + Waste factor)). Waste factor covers cuts and breakage. It is higher for diagonal or herringbone layouts than a straight one, since those cuts leave more unusable offcuts.
Understanding your estimate
Buy flooring by square footage alone and you'll usually order wrong, because a floor isn't poured to fit a room, it's built out of whole planks laid edge to edge. The plank you trim to close against a wall is almost always too short to reuse anywhere else in the room. This calculator counts planks, not raw area, and adds the waste a real install actually produces before it tells you what to buy.
A 10 by 10 room, worked out
Open this calculator and its defaults already match a common small room: a 10 ft by 10 ft room, a 48 in by 5 in plank, straight pattern, 7% waste.
- Plank dimensions converted to feet: 48 in ÷ 12 = 4 ft, 5 in ÷ 12 ≈ 0.42 ft.
- Plank area: 4 × 0.42 ≈ 1.67 ft².
- Room area: 10 × 10 = 100 ft².
- Planks with no waste added yet: 100 ÷ 1.67, rounded up, comes to 61.
- Add the 7% waste factor for a straight pattern: 65 planks, the number that goes on the shopping list.
- Check the optional box count at the default 20 ft² per box: 65 planks × 1.67 ft² ≈ 108 ft² of material, divided by 20, rounded up to 6 boxes.
Why the plank count never rounds down
Sixty and a hair over becomes 61, not 60, and 61 with waste added becomes 65, not 64 point something rounded politely. This calculator never rounds a purchase quantity down, anywhere in its output. Running one plank short three rows from the far wall means stopping the job to go back for a single piece. One extra plank left over after the install costs you a return you probably won't bother making. That trade only makes sense in one direction, so the rounding only goes in one direction too.
Why the waste factor follows the pattern, not a flat number
The waste field defaults to 7% for a straight layout and jumps to 12% the moment you switch the pattern toggle to diagonal, and that same 12% covers herringbone too, not a third preset of its own. Diagonal and herringbone cuts both throw away more offcut than a straight run against a square wall, for the same reason: more of each cut plank ends up too short or too odd-angled to use elsewhere in the room. The toggle only changes what's pre-filled in an editable field. The formula itself never sees which pattern you picked, only a waste percentage. Why the box count isn't just area divided by coverage
Check the box option and this calculator divides by the material you're actually buying, 65 planks' worth of area, not the room's raw 100 ft² with waste sprinkled on top. Those two numbers aren't the same. Plank rounding already pushed the purchased area past what the waste factor alone would produce, and skipping that step would quietly undercount boxes on a room where the plank math rounded up by a lot. The field is optional. Leave it blank and the result simply doesn't show a box count.
What one run of this calculator covers
This is one rectangular room per calculation. An L-shaped room means running it twice, once per rectangle, and adding the two plank counts yourself. It also won't tell you what any of this costs. Plank and box prices vary by material and retailer enough that a number here would be wrong before you got to the store. What it gives you instead is the same physical quantity every time: how many planks, and how many boxes, a rectangle of that size actually needs.
