Understanding your estimate
Order pavers short and you're waiting on a second delivery halfway through the job, patio half laid, the rest of the yard roped off until the truck comes back. Order too many and the extras sit stacked against the garage wall for a project that's already finished. The math behind this calculator is one division and one rounding factor. What actually saves you that second delivery is the fact that the laying pattern changes the waste factor, and the fact that a paver's thickness never enters the count at all.
A 12×10 patio, worked out
Take a 12 ft by 10 ft patio laid with 12 in by 12 in pavers, the default running bond pattern.
- Patio area: 12 × 10 = 120 ft².
- Paver face area: 12 in × 12 in converts to 1 ft². Thickness never enters this number, only the face that sits flush with the ground.
- Divide the two: 120 ÷ 1 = 120 pavers for a perfect, waste-free fit.
- Running bond's default 10% waste factor pushes that to 120 × 1.10 = 132. That's the number you order, not the 120 the patio geometrically needs.
- Switch the pattern to herringbone and the count becomes 138, same patio, same pavers, only the waste default moved from 10% to 15%.
Why the laying pattern is a preset, not a variable
Running bond and herringbone aren't two different formulas inside this calculator. They're two labeled buttons, and each one sets a different default for the waste factor field: 10% for running bond, 15% for herringbone, the same split the Tile Calculator already uses between straight and diagonal setting. An angled pattern cuts more pieces at the border of a rectangular patio than a straight one does, so it eats more material before you even reach the middle of the job. Rather than invent a fresh number for pavers, we reused the range the Tile Calculator had already proved out. The waste factor field stays editable either way, so if your own job runs leaner or heavier than either default, type the number you actually expect.
Why a paver's thickness never enters the count
Only the paver's face, length times width, decides how many pavers cover the patio. A 2 in thick paver and a 3 in thick paver at the same length and width need the exact same count. Thickness changes how deep your base and edge restraint need to be, a question this calculator doesn't answer, but it changes nothing about how many pieces tile a flat rectangle. The Tile Calculator and the Brick Calculator settled on the same reasoning for the same reason: counting pieces is a two-dimensional problem no matter how thick the piece is in the third dimension.
Why the area figures stay exact but the paver count doesn't
Patio area and paver area come back from this calculator at full precision, unrounded. Only the final paver count gets rounded, and only ever up. 131.9 pavers becomes 132, never 131. A shortfall mid-patio means a special order and a delay while the rest of the job waits on pavers that match a pattern already half laid. One extra paver left in the driveway costs you nothing you weren't planning to spend anyway. The area figures don't get that treatment because a purchase is counted in whole pavers. Only the number tied to that actual purchase gets pushed to the safe side.
What this calculator won't lay out
This covers one rectangle: a straight length by width, nothing curved, no L-shaped patio split around a fire pit or a flower bed. If your patio has more than one section, add the sections together first, in the Square Footage Calculator, then run this calculator once per rectangle with the pieces you get back. That's more typing than a single irregular-shape tool would ask for, but it's the same minimum-scope decision every calculator on this site makes: cover the shape that's actually common, and let you compose the rest.
